Looking for a writer?

I’m looking for a job!

Hey there! Welcome to my writing portfolio.

My name is Dan! I graduated from Western Washington University with a bachelor’s degree in English Creative Writing and a minor in Film Studies.

What in tarnation is a Dan Deshaies?

A Dan Deshaies is a Writerman who was born in Redmond, Washington. He was locally sourced by two exceptionally supportive parents who allowed him to get a college degree in creative writing. He now spends his days trying to prove that they made the right choice.

Skills and Services

(In no particular order)

Editing

What’s that, Lassie? Your paper is due tomorrow and you’ve encountered a mental block?! Well, I’ll help you knock it out of the park, but after that you’re going to have to explain why a dog is writing a paper.

Writing

In fifth grade, I made my class and teacher cackle with my “Tourist’s Guide to Uranus” project, and that was it. From classrooms to dinner parties to open mics, bringing joy to strangers is my bread and butter. Using my creativity to make other people laugh is the best feeling I’ve ever found, and I’m never going to stop trying to make that happen.

Transcribing

Transcribing audio is a pain, right? Not for me! I have been doing audio transcription work for friends, family, and academic/personal projects for over four years now. My projects have included multiple different “accented” forms of English and a wide range of topics. I enjoy the repetitive nature of transcribing and editing. It soothes me.

Collaborating

Everyone thinks that writers are these obscure weirdos, living in the woods and cranking out coffee-and-cigarette-fueled manuscripts, but that’s not me! For the most part! I actually thrive in collaborative environments where my voice is one of many that are striving towards a common goal, and I’m excellent at teaching others how to collaborate as well!

What does Dan like?

I like a lot of different things, so this section is going to get a little rambly.

You’ve been warned.

I have always been fascinated by print and visual media. It’s part of the reason why I’ve been obsessed with content like comics, animation, video games, movies, and television shows since I was very small and wide. Now that I’m small and wide but older (and educated), I have the tools necessary to create the things I love. I am particularly interested in collaborative environments such as writers rooms. I want to know how a collection of abstract ideas can be formed into a singular coherent vision, and I want to know how those ideas can form different perspectives of the same piece. Give me a good story and good characters and I’m happy.
